As the raw material of polyacrylamide contains acrylamide, which is a nerve agent, once poisoned, it will cause damage to the nervous system, showing weakness, dyskinesia and other symptoms. Therefore, many people will wonder whether the residual polyacrylamide will cause human poisoning once it enters the human body when adding polyacrylamide in the water treatment process?

Although acrylamide is toxic, the U.S. Food and drug administration believes that polyacrylamide and its water disintegration after polymerization are non-toxic or low toxic. The toxicity of PAM mainly comes from the residual acrylamide monomer in the finished product and toxic metals in the production process. Therefore, the health departments of all countries have stipulated that the content of acrylamide in polyacrylamide industrial products is generally 0.5% - 0.05%. The content of acrylamide is less than 0.2% when it is used in general purification of water, and less than 0.05% when it is used in direct drinking water treatment. According to the standard of polyacrylamide which was born in 1985 by the international health organization, the content of residual acrylamide in the treated water will be lower than 0.25ug/l when the amount of residual acrylamide in polyacrylamide is controlled below 0.05%, which meets the drinking water standard of most countries.

PAM products have long been approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency or the food and drug administration, and can be used in drinking water, sugar juice clarification, fruit and vegetable washing and other fields. EU and China have strict requirements on the content of am in food grade PAM, which is generally lower than 0.05%. The dosage of PAM is also limited. Food grade products should be used for flocculation in drinking water treatment. In the water treatment standard of the implementation manual of water supply and drainage standards, it is clearly stipulated that polyacrylamide is used more than 0.1mg/l under infrequent use and less than 0.1mg/l under frequent use. Therefore, when polyacrylamide is used in wastewater treatment, sludge dewatering and other fields, there is no need to worry about the harm of PAM toxic residues to human body.
